Few would mistake Bernie Sanders’ socialism-tinged politics with Ted Cruz’s hardcore conservatism, but the two read from nearly identical scripts this week on some of the thorniest foreign policy issues facing America.

Sanders, during Saturday night’s televised Democratic debate, ripped his top rival — Hillary Clinton — for what he described as an overly aggressive approach to toppling Middle Eastern dictators, a bullheadedness he said has created power vacuums filled by opportunistic terror groups like the Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL).

“Secretary Clinton is too much into regime change and a little bit too aggressive without knowing what the unintended consequences might be,” he said.

That sounded an awful lot like Cruz’s complaints that his rival, Marco Rubio, has been too gung ho about eliminating dictators like Syria’s Bashar Assad.

"If we topple Assad, the result will be ISIS will take over Syria and it will worsen U.S. national security interests," the Texas senator said during Tuesday’s Republican debate.

Sanders repeatedly warned that the United States has too often been the world’s policeman and that the country must work to enlist Arab and Muslim forces to fight battles against authoritarian regimes while focusing more tactically on uprooting ISIL and other groups working to attack the United States.

“We could get rid of Assad tomorrow but that would create another political vacuum,” he said.

Both Cruz and Sanders both worried that U.S. intervention in Libya, though it successfully toppled Muammar Qaddafi, had unleashed chaos that allowed terrorists to establish a stronghold in North Africa.

Clinton fired back that Sanders had actually voted to take out Qaddafi, who she called “a despot with American blood on his hands.”

“Now Libyans are turning their attention to try to dislodge ISIS from its foothold,” she said.
