パレスチナ暫定自治区のガザ地区とイスラエルとの境界付近で１７日、イスラエル軍の部隊がパトロールをしていたところ、パレスチナの武装勢力が仕掛けていた爆弾が爆発して兵士４人がけがをし、このうち２人は重傷を負いました。
これに対し、イスラエル軍は報復に乗り出し、１７日夜から１８日未明にかけて戦闘機による空爆を繰り返し行い、イスラム原理主義組織ハマスの武器の製造施設や地下トンネルなど合わせて１８か所を攻撃したと発表しました。
一方、ハマスの軍事部門は、地対空ミサイルを使って応戦したと発表し、この影響でイスラエル側では断続的に空襲警報が鳴り響きました。
アメリカのトランプ大統領が、エルサレムをイスラエルの首都と一方的に発表して以降、パレスチナ側は抗議デモを続けていますが、ハマスが実効支配するガザ地区では軍事的な緊張も高まっています。
