アメリカ議会上院は7日、バイデン大統領が連邦最高裁の新しい判事に指名していたケタンジ・ジャクソン氏（51）について本会議で投票を行い、賛成53、反対47の賛成多数で承認しました。
ジャクソン氏はことし夏に正式に判事に就任する予定で、連邦最高裁では黒人女性として初めての判事となります。
バイデン大統領は7日、ツイッターに、議会の承認をジャクソン氏とともにテレビで見守る様子を投稿し「わが国にとって歴史的な瞬間だ。最高裁をアメリカの多様性を反映したものにする新たな一歩となった」として歓迎しました。
連邦最高裁は人工妊娠中絶や同性婚、銃規制の是非など社会を二分するような問題に最終的な司法判断を多数決で示すことから、9人の判事のうち保守派とリベラル派の構成が重要な意味を持ちます。
今回はリベラル派の男性判事の退任に伴う人事で、ジャクソン氏もリベラル派とされていることから、保守派が6人、リベラル派が3人という構成は変わらない見通しです。

米ニューヨーク州のジェームズ司法長官は７日、トランプ前大統領の一族が経営する企業トランプ・オーガニゼーションの取引に対する調査を巡り、書類提出の要請に応じていないとして、州裁判所に対しトランプ氏を法廷侮辱罪に問うよう訴えた。
ジェームズ司法長官によるとトランプ氏は、３月３１日までに文書や情報を「完全な形で」提出するよう求める裁判所命令に従わなかった。同司法長官は「トランプ氏は裁判所の命令に従わないどころか、それを回避しようとしている」とし、トランプ氏が応じるまで１日あたり１万ドル以上の罰金を科すよう求めた。
トランプ氏側は疑惑を繰り返し否定し、ジェームズ司法長官による調査を「魔女狩り」と呼んでいる。
