アメリカ移民局のクチネリ長官代行は12日、ホワイトハウスで記者会見し「トランプ政権は自己責任の理念のもと、移民がアメリカで自立して成功できる制度を導入する」と述べ、不法移民が市民権や永住権を得るための条件を厳格化すると発表しました。
具体的には、所得や教育水準が低い移民や、アメリカ政府が提供する医療補助や食料援助など福祉サービスを利用した経歴がある移民については、市民権などの取得を難しくするということです。
この制度はことし10月15日から施行されるということで、トランプ大統領としては来年の大統領選挙に向けてみずからの看板政策でもある不法移民対策の強化をアピールするねらいがあると見られます。
これに対し野党・民主党は、トランプ大統領の移民に対する差別的な言動が社会の分断や、移民をねらったヘイトクライムを助長していると批判を強めており、移民政策をめぐる議論はますます過熱しそうです。
