南部バージニア州のシャーロッツビルでは4年前、白人至上主義者の集会に抗議するデモを行っていた人たちに車が突っ込み、1人が死亡、30人余りがけがをしました。

一方、主催者側が連邦法で禁じられている人種差別的な暴力行為を企てたり共謀したりしたかについては陪審員の意見が一致せず、評決に至らなかったということです。

事件をめぐっては、トランプ前大統領が当初、白人至上主義者に一定の理解を示す発言をしたことでアメリカ社会の分断の象徴だと批判されたことなどから、今回の評決に注目が集まっていました。

NASAは、地球に衝突する可能性のある小惑星などの天体が見つかった場合、軌道をそらして衝突を避けるための研究の一環として、小惑星に衝撃を与えて、軌道を変える実験を計画しています。

その実験に使われる探査機が、日本時間の24日午後3時20分すぎに西部カリフォルニア州のバンデンバーグ宇宙軍基地から「ファルコン9」ロケットで打ち上げられました。

探査機は、およそ10か月かけて地球から1100万キロ離れたところにある直径160メートルほどの小惑星「ディモフォス」まで飛行します。

重さおよそ500キロの探査機は、時速2万4000キロで小惑星に衝突し、その衝撃による軌道の変化を、地上や後に打ち上げられる別の探査機から観測する計画です。

NASAによりますと、探査機が衝突する小惑星が地球に衝突する危険性はなく、あくまで技術の実証が目的だということです。

NASAは「今後100年の間に大きな災害をもたらす大きさの小惑星が地球に衝突する可能性は極めて低い」としていますが、地球と衝突する潜在的な危険性があるとされる小惑星は、20個以上見つかっているほか、より小さな小惑星の中には正確な軌道が分かっていないものもあります。

NASAはこうした小惑星の発見や監視などのため5年前に「地球防衛調整局」を設置し、対策を進めています。
