Courage is hardly worthy of being counted among the virtues if it is not done for righteousness. In the Analects of Confucius, he reluctantly defined courage in accordance with his usual argument: "There is no courage in seeing righteousness and not doing it. To rephrase this maxim positively, courage is to do what is righteous.
Taking all kinds of risks, risking one's life, jumping into the jaws of death - these are often equated with bravery, and yet in the profession of arms, such bravery - what Shakespeare called "the bastard child of courage" - is unfairly applauded. -In the professions of arms, however, these acts of bravery were unfairly applauded.
In the Bushido, however, dying for something unworthy of death was frowned upon as "dog death. Plato defined courage as "discriminating between what is to be feared and what is not to be feared," and Prince Giko of Mito, who had never even heard of Plato, said, "To run into battle and die is an easy thing to do. True courage is to live when you should live and to die only when you should die.
