ホワイトハウスの南側の庭園で２３日、アメリカを訪れているローマ法王のフランシスコ法王の歓迎式典が開かれました。
この中で、オバマ大統領はアメリカとキューバの５４年ぶりの国交回復で仲介役を担った法王に対して、「われわれがキューバ国民と新たな関係を始めることへの法王の支援に感謝します」と伝えました。また、オバマ大統領は「世界では信仰のために殺害されたり拘束されたりする人たちがいる」と指摘し、信仰の自由の実現に取り組む考えを強調しました。
一方、フランシスコ法王は「気候変動は将来の世代に先送りできない問題だ」と述べ、地球温暖化対策を進めるよう呼びかけました。
このあとフランシスコ法王はオバマ大統領と会談し、急増する難民の問題や貧困対策などを巡って意見を交わしました。また、フランシスコ法王は車でパレードを行い、大勢の人たちが沿道で手を振るなど歓迎ムードに包まれました。ホワイトハウスでは２５日にオバマ大統領が中国の習近平国家主席を迎える予定ですが、中国は国内でキリスト教に対する締めつけを強めていて、抗議活動の呼びかけも行われています。
