アメリカのトランプ大統領は９日夜、日本時間の10日午前、連邦最高裁判所のケネディ判事が今月末で退任するのに合わせ、後任として、保守派で高等裁判所に当たる連邦控訴裁判所の判事を務めるカバナー氏を指名すると発表しました。

トランプ大統領はカバナー氏について「優れた能力と、法のもとの平等や正義のために力を尽くしてきた経歴がある。この要職を務めるにあたり、これ以上適任な人はいない」と述べました。

カバナー氏は53歳。
クリントン政権では大統領夫妻の不正融資疑惑などを捜査する特別検察官のチームの一員として活動し、保守派の法律家として知られています。

現在の連邦最高裁判所は、９人の判事のうち明確に保守派とされる判事が４人、リベラル派が４人で構成され、退任するケネディ判事は一般に保守派と位置づけられながらも、同性婚を認める判決を支持するなど時にリベラル寄りの考えも示し、判決を左右してきました。

カバナー氏が今後、議会上院で承認されれば、判事の過半数の５人がトランプ大統領の考えに近い保守派で占められることになり、人工妊娠中絶や銃規制の是非、移民制度改革など、アメリカ社会を二分する問題の判断に大きな影響を与えることになります。
