アメリカの連邦最高裁判所で争われているのは南部ミシシッピ州で3年前（2018年）に成立した妊娠15週以降の人工妊娠中絶を原則として禁止する法律が憲法違反にあたるかどうかです。
アメリカでは連邦最高裁が1973年に中絶は女性の権利だとする判断を示していますが、トランプ前政権で最高裁では中絶に否定的な傾向があるとされる保守派の判事が多数派となったことから判断が覆る可能性があるとも指摘されています。
審理が始まった1日、最高裁前には全米各地から中絶規制に対する賛成派と反対派の双方が大勢集まり、それぞれの主張を訴えました。
中絶規制に反対する女子大学生は「妊娠中絶を選ぶのは女性の権利であり、最高裁の判断が覆れば女性にとって悲劇になる」と話していました。
一方、規制に賛成する女性は「おなかのなかにいるときから赤ちゃんの命は大切にされるべきで、最高裁の判断が覆るときがようやくきたと信じている」と話していました。
連邦最高裁は来年6月にも判断を示すとみられていますが、これまでの判断が覆った場合、直ちに中絶を規制するとしている州も多く、全米の注目が集まっています。
