オバマ大統領は１０日夜、日本時間の１１日午前１０時すぎから、イスラム過激派組織「イスラム国」に対処する包括的な戦略について国民に向けてテレビ演説を行いました。
この中でオバマ大統領は「『イスラム国』は、アメリカだけでなくイラクとシリア、そして中東全体の脅威となっている」と述べました。
そして、イラクで新政権が成立したことを受けて同盟国や議会と協議した結果、「テロの脅威を後退させるため、アメリカが幅広い連合を先導していく」と述べ、ヨーロッパや中東の諸国と協力して「イスラム国」を弱体化させ、最終的に壊滅させる決意を示しました。そのうえで「『イスラム国』に対して、イラク同様にシリアでも軍事行動をとることをためらわない」と述べ、現在実施している空爆を今後はイラクに限定せずにシリアにも拡大する方針を示しました。ただ、アメリカ軍の大規模な地上部隊を派遣する考えはないとしています。
アメリカ軍は先月８日からイラク北部で過激派組織に対する空爆を実施し、その後イラク中部や西部に空爆の範囲を広げ、その数は１５０回を超えています。
アメリカ軍は無人機などでシリア上空から過激派組織に対する情報収集を行い、シリア国内の拠点に対する空爆の実施に向けた準備を進めているものと見られます。
