バイデン大統領は18日、アメリカのABCテレビのインタビューに答え、アメリカ軍がアフガニスタンからの撤退を進める中で武装勢力タリバンが権力を掌握したことについて「混乱を招かずに済む方法があったとは思えない」と述べ、混乱は避けられたものではなく、軍の撤退そのものに問題はなかったと強調しました。
また、現地で暮らすアメリカ人などの国外退避を進めている部隊について「アメリカ人が残っていれば、全員を退避させるまでとどまる」と述べ、駐留する部隊の撤退期限となっている今月末以降も部隊を残す可能性に初めて言及しました。
一方でタリバンが短期間で権力を掌握したことについて、バイデン大統領は「情報機関からの報告では年末まではないだろうとのことだった」と述べ、情報機関も予測ができていなかったことを認めました。
