バイデン大統領は3日、ルイジアナ州の被災地を視察し、地元の州知事や災害対応にあたる責任者から被災の状況を聞き取りました。
その後演説したバイデン大統領は気候変動を念頭に「ハリケーンや巨大な暴風雨は今後、より頻繁に、より甚大な規模で発生するだろう」と述べました。
そのうえで「各州の知事や与野党の議員と協力しながら排水施設や電力網などの改修に力を入れていく」と述べ、災害に備えたインフラの整備に取り組んでいく考えを強調しました。
ルイジアナ州では今回のハリケーンで100万戸以上が停電し、今も多くの人が避難を余儀なくされていて、バイデン大統領は関係機関に対し復旧対策を急ぐよう指示しました。

アメリカのバイデン大統領は3日、司法省などに対し、2001年9月11日にアメリカを襲った同時多発テロ事件に関するFBI＝連邦捜査局の捜査資料などの機密指定の解除を検討するよう指示する大統領令に署名しました。
この中でバイデン大統領は「アメリカ政府が事件について何を知っているのか国民が全体像を把握できるべきだ」として、今後180日以内に国の安全保障に影響のない資料については機密を解除すべきだとしています。
同時多発テロ事件の捜査資料をめぐっては、遺族らが、事件を首謀した国際テロ組織アルカイダの指導者 オサマ・ビンラディン容疑者の出身国サウジアラビアの政府による事件への関与が疑われるなどと主張して開示を求めていました。
これまでの調査ではサウジアラビア政府がアルカイダを支援していた証拠は見つからなかったとしていますが、遺族らは資料が開示されなければ今月11日の追悼式典への大統領の出席は歓迎しないとしていました。
バイデン大統領としては、同時多発テロ事件から20年の節目を迎えるのを前に遺族側に配慮を示した形です。
