　シリコンバレーの成長を支え「シリコンバレーを作った25人」の一人といわれる、レジス・マッケンナとの出会いは1990年代中ごろだった。


　彼の誘いで、彼のコンサルティング会社に入ったことがきっかけで、私は日本企業への新事業創造に関わるコンサルティングを始めることとなった。何度も一緒に日本に出張し、その時間を独り占めできたのはとても幸運なことだったと思う。


　レジスは70年代、シリコンバレーの黎明（れいめい）期に、米インテルや米アップルコンピューター（現アップル）にマーケティングを指南したことで知られる。


　アップル初の本格パソコン「Apple 2」が開発された当時、共同創業者のスティーブ・ジョブズとスティーブ・ウォズニアックはそれぞれ21歳、25歳の血気盛んな若者だった。


　開発したウォズが技術的なスペックばかりを説明するので、レジスは「ユーザーにとってどのような価値があるのかを説明してくれ」と言うと、ウォズは怒って部屋を出ていってしまった。


　だが、そのときにジョブズは「待てよ、こういうユーザーとのコミュニケーションは大事かもしれない」と考え直し、マーケティング戦略をレジスと進めることになった。


　コンピューターがまだ“オタク”の趣味でしかなかった時代に、利用者への提供価値という観点でマーケティングの重要性を説き、ジョブズのマーケティング能力をも開花させたのがレジスであったのだ。

　もちろん、生まれつきの感性や揺るぎない価値観によるところが大きいとは思うが、レジスと接してきた私には他にも感じる点が幾つかある。


　まず、レジスが高学歴ではないよそ者であったことだ。フィラデルフィアで地元の大学を卒業し、シリコンバレーに流れ着いた彼に失うものはなかった。


　学歴を利用して有名企業に入社する発想がなかったから、目の前にある面白い企業に就職し、シリコンバレーが産声を上げる時期の企業と関わった。その企業がたまたまインテルやアップルだったというわけだ。


　レジスと周りの友人たちは「建前」「会社の事情」「大人の賢さ」からは遠い価値観の人たちだった。従って、物事を真っさらな気持ちで見ることができたのだろう。


　また、物事を実行するときに必要な「大人の態度」を備えていた。例えば、批判的なジャーナリストにも丁寧に対応していた。


　多くの先進的なスタートアップにコンサルティングや投資をすることで、独り善がりの理論に流されることなく、実践的なアイデアを磨いていた。そのため、数多くの「世界初」を演出してきた。


　常にスタートアップの内側に入り、フロンティアに立つことによって、いち早く未来を「知る」ことができたのだと思う。彼にはなれずとも、その足跡から未来を知るすべは学べるはずだ。

　ハイテク業界の労働者や起業家からも、サンフランシスコのベイエリアから転出したか転出を予定しているとの声が聞かれる。理由にあげられているのは、異質な社会的価値観や政治的イデオロギーを受け入れない雰囲気だ。同地は集団思考や画一性のせいで、生活や仕事がしづらい場所になっているという。


　10年前にベイエリアからロサンゼルスに移ったエンジェル投資家のトム・マキナニー氏は「サンフランシスコの政治は少し狂ってきたと思う」と話した。さらに、「トランプ氏の当選は超二極化（の表れ）であり、シリコンバレーがいかにずれているかを浮き彫りにした。このずれについてはピーター（ティール氏）も話していた」と述べた。自身は財政については保守派だが社会的にはリベラルだと考えている。


　ハイテク投資家でベストセラー「4 Hour Workweek（週4時間労働）」の著者ティム・フェリス氏は昨年12月、テキサス州オースティンに移った。17年間暮らしたベイエリアでは、極端なリベラル思想に従わない人は罰せられると感じたことも理由のひとつだ。


　フェリス氏は最近、インターネット掲示板のレディットで、シリコンバレーの人々が「職を失うことや人前で非難されることを恐れて公然とうそをつく」と述べた。自身は社会的にはリベラルだというフェリス氏は、オースティンが「アート、音楽、映画、テクノロジー、フードなどの面で素晴らしく進展している」とし、人々も「一般にずっとフレンドリーだ」と付け加えた。

いわゆるロシア疑惑の捜査を進めているモラー特別検察官は１６日、トランプ陣営を支援するため、アメリカ大統領選挙に干渉したとして、ロシアの３つの団体や１３人の関係者を起訴したと発表しました。


これを受けてトランプ大統領は、週末、ロシア疑惑をめぐってツイッターに１０回以上、投稿しました。


このうち１７日夜の投稿では、ＦＢＩが南部フロリダ州の高校で起きた銃の乱射事件で逮捕された男について、事前に事件を犯す危険性があると通報を受けながら捜査していなかったことに触れ、「容認できない。彼らはトランプ陣営とロシアの共謀を証明しようと多くの時間をかけすぎている」と非難しました。そして「共謀はない」と書き込み、改めて共謀を否定しました。


また、１８日朝には「オバマ前大統領はロシアの脅威を知っていながら何もしなかった」とか「ロシアは想像以上に成功し、笑い転げているだろう」と投稿し、当時のオバマ政権の対応を批判するなど反論に躍起になっています。


2016年米大統領選へのロシア介入疑惑を巡り、トランプ大統領は週末の多くの時間を米連邦捜査局（ＦＢＩ）や民主党、モラー特別検察官の捜査、マクマスター大統領補佐官（国家安全保障担当）への批判に費やした。例外だったのはロシアだ。


　　トランプ氏がロシアに絡んで24時間にツイートした14ものメッセージは、自身の大統領当選の正当性を擁護するとともに、ロシアの情報操作に自身とその陣営が共謀したことはないと主張する点に主眼を置く内容だった。


　　大統領は、介入疑惑がどれほど大々的に捜査されているかについて、ロシアは「モスクワで大笑いしている」と記した。だが、モラー特別検察官が16日、ロシアの個人と企業を訴追した際に列挙したような介入をやめるよう促すメッセージは見当たらず、具体的な対抗策としては「米国よ賢くなれ！」と呼び掛けただけだった。


　　このうちＦＢＩに対しては、ロシア疑惑の捜査に集中し過ぎるあまり、フロリダ州の高校で起きた銃撃事件を防ぐことができたかもしれない兆候を見逃したと指摘。共謀疑惑をあらためて否定した上で、ＦＢＩは「基本に戻って、われわれ全てに誇りを取り戻せ！」とツイートした。

イスラエルは、今月１０日、隣国シリアを支援するイランの無人機がイスラエル領空を侵犯したとして撃墜するとともに、戦闘機で、シリアの軍事施設に越境攻撃を行いましたが、この際、逆にシリア側の反撃を受けて、Ｆ１６戦闘機１機が撃墜され、緊張が高まっています。


これについて、イスラエルのネタニヤフ首相は、１８日、ドイツのミュンヘンで開かれた安全保障に関する国際会議で講演し、越境攻撃のきっかけとなったイラン製の無人機のものだとする破片を掲げてイランを非難しました。そのうえで、「必要に応じてイランが支援する国々だけでなく、イラン本国に対して行動を起こす」と述べ、イラン本国への越境攻撃も辞さないと警告しました。


これに対して、イランのザリーフ外相は「イスラエルの周辺国に対する武力行使こそが問題だ。イランに責任を押しつけても何も解決しない」と述べて反論し、両国の対立があらわになりました。


中東では、地域大国のイランが、シリアの内戦への関与を通じてシリア国内でも勢力を強めているとして、イスラエルが神経をとがらせていて、イスラエルとイランが直接、衝突する事態へと発展しないか懸念が広がっています。

US troops must immediately shut down their zone of control in Southern Syria in the area of Al-Tanf, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, speaking at Valdai Club conference on Middle East in Moscow.


The area on Syria’s border with Jordan, which Washington designated as a “de-confliction zone” under its protection, hosts the Rukban refugee camp, Lavrov said on Monday. Russia believes the camp to be a recruiting ground for militant groups and blames the US for restricting humanitarian access to it.


“This zone must be shut down immediately. And deliveries of humanitarian aid must be allowed into the camp,” the minister said.


Lavrov added that efforts aimed at reducing violence in south-western Syria, in an area that Russia designated as a “de-escalation zone,” now must focus on pushing out all non-Syrian troops from that region.


“We negotiated the creation of this zone with Jordan and the US and it’s not a secret that our Israeli colleagues were informed about what we discussed,” he said. Israel accuses Iran of using proxy forces to seize control of parts of southern Syria, and has threatened to use military force to reverse the situation.


Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has described reports that hundreds of Russians have been killed in Syria as speculation. “The stuff we read about hundreds and even thousands of killed Russian mercenaries are attempts to indulge in speculation on the war that, regrettably, is continuing in Syria,” Lavrov said on Monday. He was speaking on the sidelines of a conference of the international-discussion club, Valdai, which is entitled ‘Russia in the Middle East: Playing on All Fields.’ He added: “These attempts are not very appropriate, to say the least.” According to the foreign minister, “tensions are being fanned over fake news without specific facts being presented.” He said that an investigation is under way. President Bashar Assad’s adviser, Bouthaina Shaaban, was quoted by RIA Novosti on Monday as saying that information on the killing of Russian citizens in Syria is propaganda by Western media.

EU’s demands for the Balkan states to choose between the West or Russia are counterproductive and only increase tensions on the European continent, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Serbia’s Beta news agency.


Ukraine was presented with same dilemma, Lavrov said, which “eventually led to a fracture in the Ukrainian society and state; caused an unconstitutional coup (in 2014) and the rise of radicals, including Neo-Nazis, in the internal political affairs of the country.”


“Now they want to drag the Balkans into this same game, making them choose whether they are with the West or with Russia,” he warned.


The EU’s Balkan expansion plan foresees the inclusion of both Serbia and Montenegro into the bloc by 2025 if the countries meet certain conditions. Among other things, Belgrade is required to normalize relations with Kosovo, which unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008, and bring its foreign policy into line with those of the EU.


The European Union’s demands for Serbia to accept the anti-Russian component of the bloc’s foreign policy are “sad and upsetting,” Lavrov said ahead of his visit to Belgrade. This approach by Brussels “contradicts all our joint statements made after the Cold War ended… that one shouldn’t strengthen one’s own security at the expense of others. This is what they are trying to do, as I have said, by working to integrate the Balkans into the policy of dividing lines; the policy of surrounding Russia with the military infrastructure of NATO.”


“This is a manifestation of the same philosophy and mentality that contributes to the tensions in Europe; that guided those who were expanding NATO and made Ukraine and European countries choose whether they are with the West or with Russia. It is a wicked practice,” the FM said.


Countries like Russia, China and Turkey want to work in the region on an “open, constructive basis, but we see attempts by the US and the EU to introduce anti-Russian elements in its Balkan policy,” he said. According to the minister, Russian diplomats never tell their counterparts that they shouldn’t make friends with the West. “But Washington and some European capitals send their emissaries to the Balkans with a specific message: ‘Do not be friends with Russia; refuse cooperation with it in all possible areas.’”


At the same time, Lavrov pointed out that Russia does not “see any risks in the desire of the nations of the Balkan region and other countries on the European continent to develop relations with the EU, including joining it. They are presented with the terms of entry and they themselves must decide how satisfactory those conditions are and how they match their national interests.”


Serbian aspirations to join the EU have been discussed with the country’s President, Aleksandar Vucic, and “he never said that it would be done at the expense of Russia. On the contrary, he stressed that the Russian vector of the foreign policy and cooperation would remain very important for Serbia. I am sure that this is in the interest of the Serbian people,” Russia’s top diplomat said.


Lavrov went on to praise the “pragmatic approach” of the Serbian authorities, which is aimed at taking advantage of connections “both in the West and the East.”


“One shouldn’t think about creating closed alliances, be it in military, political or economic spheres. We need to look at things beyond the four-year horizon until the next election in this or that European country, and see perspective. That perspective, I think, is a very positive one, if we are all guided by interest in joint work, for the benefit of our own citizens in each individual country and on the European continent as a whole. It seems to me that this is what the Serbian leadership’s approach comes from,” he said.

小売業界などで人手不足が深刻化する中、大手電機メーカーのパナソニックなどは、店舗の商品一つ一つに電子タグをつけることで、買い物客が専用のレーンを歩いて通るだけで会計ができる新しいシステムを開発し、１９日から実証実験を始めました。


この実証実験は、「パナソニック」と、ディスカウントストアなどを展開する「トライアルカンパニー」が、福岡市東区にあるトライアルの本社内の従業員向けの実験店舗で始めました。


商品にはそれぞれ、商品情報が入っている電子タグが付いていて、会計は、プリペイドカードを使います。


買い物客が、歩きながら買い物袋ごと専用のレーンを通ると、モニターに購入した商品の一覧と金額が表示され、５秒ほどの短時間で会計ができます。


小売業界などで人手不足が深刻になる中、今回の仕組みは、これまでよりレジの従業員を減らすことができるほか、商品を１点ずつ電子タグで管理することで、細かい商品管理も可能になるとしています。


パナソニックの青田広幸執行役員は、「完成度を上げて、ことし６月から８月ごろに実際の店舗への導入を考えていきたい。今後の普及に向けて一般的に７円から１０円ほどの電子タグのコストを、１円を切るよう研究開発を進めている」と話しています。

ＮＴＴは柔道などのスポーツの試合を立体的に映し出す最新の技術を１９日、公開しました。２０２０年の東京オリンピック・パラリンピックに向けて実用化を目指すとしています。

ＮＴＴが公開したのは、スポーツの競技の様子を立体的に映し出す技術です。


４つの方向から撮影されたカメラ映像が、動き回る選手の位置情報とともに光回線で伝送される仕組みで、専用のモニターに実際の１０分の１の大きさで映し出されます。


３Ｄメガネをつけずに、どの方向からでもカラー映像が立体的に見え、柔道や空手などの試合の中継に活用すれば、より臨場感のあるスポーツ観戦ができるようになるとしています。


このほか、複数のドローンを連携させて空中に大きなディスプレイを浮かべる技術や、ＡＩを搭載し雑談にも対応できるロボットの開発も行われていて、いずれも２年後の東京オリンピック・パラリンピックまでの実用化を目指しているということです。


立体映像の技術について、ＮＴＴ研究企画部門の黒川清統括部長は「オリンピック会場にいる限られた人だけでなく、世界中の人が空間をこえて臨場感のある観戦ができ、感動を共有できるようになる」と話していました。
